Meri Pita Candidature for Las Palmas

Meri Pita

I was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. I am the second of four children and the only girl. I attended both a state primary and secondary school and I studied at the Teacher Training College.

In the late 1970´s I became member of the communist youth and I developed my political training along with personalities such as Fernando Sagaseta, Joaquín Sagaseta or Pedro Limiñana. I was one of the founders of the popular theatre group Manticore. I worked together with my colleagues in the general and local elections in which the UPC got the local government of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the election of Fernando Sagaseta as member of the Parliament.

In 1984 I passed a public exam and I joined the Administration of Justice as a civil servant, where I was elected by the workers´ assembly as the first candidate in the first elections for the representatives bodies in 1987. In the 1990´s I was candidate both in the general and local elections for IUC together with Fernando Sagaseta and Margarita Etala

I am a firm supporter of the unity of action of the working class trough the active struggle. I take part in unitary projects as labour solidarity coordinator, and the union around that idea is summed up in the creation of the Canary Union Coordinator, which drives and concretizes the joint demonstration of the past 1 of May, Labour Day.
